AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE SUSTAINABILITY MOVEMENT

A sustainable project, committed not only to offering excellent fish but also to providing ecosystem services to its surroundings.

FARMING IN PROTECTED LANDSCAPES, PARKS, AND NATURE RESERVES

Located in brackish water marshes within natural landscapes, parks, and reserves, the esteros give life to fish of exceptional quality.

This project does more than just guarantee a premium product; it actively contributes to the restoration and conservation of local flora and
fauna, reaffirming sustainability as one of the project’s intrinsic principles.

Esteros Lubimar drives a sustainable and transformative project that generates a real positive impact on its environment:
  • Natural Water Purification: The estero, comprising both semi-intensive and extensive rearing ponds, acts as a natural filtration system. Thanks to the
local vegetation, the water returned to the environment is in significantly better condition than when it first entered, thus contributing to the improvement of local water quality.
  • Allies Against Climate Change: The estero ecosystem has an outstanding capacity for blue carbon sequestration and oxygen release, positioning itself as a key player in the fight against climate change.
  • Biodiversity Sanctuary: The estero promotes the recovery of indigenous plant and animal species. This is an area where the life cycle of wildlife remains uninterrupted, making it a safe haven for both flora and fauna.
  • Landscape Restoration and Erosion Control: Where there was once a degraded area stripped of vegetation, a fertile and biodiverse environment now flourishes. The estero’s vegetation helps stabilize the soil, preventing erosion and preserving the natural balance even in the face of adverse weather events.
  • Key Hub for Migratory Birds: The estero has established itself as a vital refuge for migratory birds at a European level. In a context of wetland loss in
Southern Spain, these marshes now serve as a home and breeding ground for iconic species such as the Kentish Plover, the Black-winged Stilt, and the Pied Avocet.
  • Scenic Beauty: What was once forgotten land is today a vibrant landscape. Flamingos and other birds coexist in a space of singular scenic beauty, blending biological richness with the natural charm of the marshlands.

AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

The esteros constitute one of the most effective natural ecosystems for blue carbon sequestration, thanks to their ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it organically within the sediments.

The estero’s capacity to fix carbon and oxygenate its surroundings is due to the fundamental role of its vegetation. In the aquatic medium, various algae and seagrass species—such as sea lettuce (Enteromorpha linza), widgeonweed (Ruppia maritima), dwarf eelgrass (Zostera noltei), and velvet horn (Codium tomentosum)—play a vital role in this process.

On the surface, numerous halophytic species (plants adapted to high salinity levels) are key to oxygenating the environment. These include cordgrass (Spartina maritima), perennial glasswort (Sarcocornia perennis and S. fruticosa), slender glasswort (Salicornia europaea), and sea seepweed (Suaeda splendens).

LOCAL COMMITMENT:

AN ECONOMIC ENGINE FOR THE REGION

What began as a small family business has evolved into a fundamental pillar for the region’s economic sustainability, generating over 200 direct jobs and revitalizing the local economy.

What began as a small family business has evolved into a fundamental pillar for the region’s economic sustainability, generating over 200 direct jobs and revitalizing the local economy.

More than just a project, this is a mission: to defend and revalue a territory and a tradition that time had nearly forgotten. By restoring and optimizing ancestral techniques—originally used by the Romans thousands of years ago Esteros Lubimar transforms the natural resources of the marshlands into fish and seafood of exceptional quality.

ASC

At Esteros Lubimar, we are proud to be the first aquaculture farm in the world to obtain certification under the new 2026 updated criteria of the ASC Farm Standard. This milestone recognizes our steadfast commitment to responsible aquaculture.

The ASC Farm Standard establishes responsible practices for global aquaculture regarding:

  • Environmental Responsibility: Including ecosystem management.
  • Fish Health and Welfare: Supported by low-density rearing and preventive health management.
  • Responsible Use of Resources: Without the use of antibiotics.
  • Social Responsibility: Including respect for workers and local communities.
  • Transparent Farm Management: Subject to continuous supervision.

Our ASC certification is not a one-time achievement; it requires continuous compliance, transparency, and constant improvement.
